In today’s digital era, nearly 3 billion people are game fanatics who live and breathe for gaming. Apart from entertainment, playing games boosts qualities like creativity, strategic thinking, and teamwork. This has made the gaming industry as the biggest and fastest-growing market across the globe. The annual revenue of this market is expected to hit $200 billion in 2021.
Also, the gaming industry has started to shift from being a device-centric one era to a player-centric one, thanks to the latest technologies that give the players the freedom to play with their buddies anywhere anytime. Microsoft’s Xbox is a key player in the gaming industry so it is not a shock for all that Microsoft has plans to acquire ZeniMax Media. It is the parent venture of Bethesda Softworks, which is one of the top privately-held game developers and publishers across the globe. It is the creator of critically acclaimed and best-selling game franchises like Fallout, DOOM, Quake, The Elder Scrolls, Wolfenstein, and Dishonored. So partnering with them will be a major boost for Xbox.
Microsoft has always been unique from other game creators as they focus mainly on empowering the players. Its cloud-gaming services like Xbox Game Pass has helped it achieve a spectacular milestone of 15 million subscribers. With the annexation of Bethesda Softworks, Microsoft will grow exponentially from 15 to 23 creative studio teams and will be including Bethesda’s classic franchises to Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft also has plans to bring Bethesda Softworks’ future games into Xbox Game Pass the same day they are released on PC or Xbox or PC. A great example of this is Starfield, the long-awaited new space game, which is currently under development in the Bethesda Game Studios.
The publishing offices, which are located at different places across the world with over 2,300 employees are also included in this acquisition plan. The development studios like Bethesda Softworks, id Software, Bethesda Game Studios, Arkane, ZeniMax Online Studios, Tango Gameworks, MachineGames, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios are also a part of the deal.
ZeniMax Media was established in 1999 by Chairman and CEO Robert A. Altman. The official news is that Bethesda’s structure and leadership will face no changes even after the acquisition. The acquisition process is still in talks and Microsoft expects it to close in the second half of 2021. Gaming enthusiasts across the globe are eagerly waiting to see the outcomes of this acquisition.
